The challenge

Healthcare questions rarely fit a menu.

Members often arrive with an intent—“What will this cost?” or “Where can I go?”—not the vocabulary or plan knowledge needed to find the right page. Traditional navigation asks them to translate a real-life need into insurance terminology before they can make progress.

The direction

Start with the question, not the site map.

Ask Me About My Benefits reframes benefits discovery as a guided conversation. The experience connects a member’s natural-language question to plan-specific context, explains relevant choices, and keeps a next action close at hand.

  • Use plain language while preserving essential benefit detail.
  • Show the source and scope of plan-specific answers.
  • Move from answer to action without forcing members to restart elsewhere.
  • Design graceful paths for ambiguity, limits, and human support.
Wireframes exploring multiple healthcare questions, answers, provider details, and feedback paths
Scenario-based wireframes tested how the pattern handled different services, networks, costs, and provider paths.

The system

One interaction model, many healthcare intents.

The design explored a reusable answer structure across podiatry, diabetes screening, diagnostic imaging, and other care scenarios. Each path balances a direct answer with supporting plan information, network guidance, provider options, and lightweight feedback.

The takeaway

AI works best when it reduces translation work.

The opportunity is larger than adding chat to an existing experience. A useful AI-native product understands intent, carries context, and assembles the few pieces of information a person needs to make a confident decision.
